What is process group therapy?

Process group therapy, or “didactic” group therapy, is a treatment approach that is centered around discussing addiction and addiction related topics with others. With your process group, you will discuss various topics under the direction of a therapist, such as stress management, relapse prevention, anger management, and interpersonal skills. Group members will have the opportunity to discuss their own experiences with addiction as they so choose, and participants can talk out the challenges they are facing in their own recoveries.

What is process group therapy like?

Process groups are often unstructured. Participants will typically bring issues to the group that they feel are important to discuss, and a therapist can lead with discussion topics as needed. During a group session, participants are encouraged to offer support and feedback to others. The focus is primarily on the interactions between group members.

How can process group therapy strengthen my recovery?

As you can imagine, process group therapy offers an excellent environment for practicing communication techniques. This type of therapy gives people who are in recovery the chance to practice interpersonal skills under the direction of a therapist. The therapist can pinpoint troublesome interpersonal patterns in group members and help them resolve these patterns. Ultimately, this helps those in recovery strengthen their communication and interpersonal skills, which they’ll need as they mend and build relationships in recovery.

Process group therapy also offers a safe environment in which those in recovery can express their feelings—a major help when you consider how unexpressed feelings are often a major source of stress in recovery. Individuals can also be exposed to multiple perspectives on recovery.
