Many of our clients have questions about transitional living: “What is it?”, “How can it strengthen my recovery from addiction?”, or “Is it right for me?”

In a nutshell, the term transitional living refers to an interim period during the overall recovery process. It occurs after residential treatment but before the individual transitions fully back into everyday life after treatment. Transitional living typically involves living at a private residential facility that was designed specifically for this interim time. This special facility offers a safe and constructive environment that promotes healthy and balanced living. Individuals in recovery live together and have support from one another to maintain their newfound sobriety. Individuals will typically also practice life skills such as home cleaning and chores on a daily basis. Usually a supervisor checks in with those at the facility to ensure that their needs are met and that transitional living is going smoothly.

Transitional living can provide many benefits to those navigating the early stages of recovery. Here are just a couple of them.

Continuing care

Many studies underline the importance of continuing care after receiving residential treatment, be it through regular group meetings, outpatient treatment, or transitional living. Transitional living is an excellent way to receive continuing care after completing residential treatment, and if prepares those in recovery for life after treatment in a way that no other continuing care method can.
